The British Journal of Zoology, founded 1830 in London, has chosen my photo as the cover of their October issue.

It shows a bumblebee (bombus terrestris) on a Mexican Zinnia (Sanvitalia procumbens) flower in visible light (left part) and UV (right part).

At the same time they will publish our paper:

Stelzer, R. J., N. E. Raine, K. D. Schmitt and L. Chittka (2010). "Effects of aposematic colouration on predation risk in bumblebees? A comparison between differently coloured populations, with consideration of the ultraviolet."

My Desert Rose (Adenium obesum) started to blossom, so here a few shots (crosseyed viewing)

not much of an UV pattern to see though....

Well, I couldn't believe it, so I tested several possibilities and using some nearly monochromatic UV LED light, a UV pattern gets visible. The multspectral filtering BV overlaying three channels simply cannot make it visible (yet...). This is though the Baader U-filter + UV Rodagon 105mm.

Here now a comparison UV LED versus filtered Xenon flash both using Baader U filter (black and white images for better comparison).

Xenon flash:

the monochromatic UV LED light reveals even more details of that UV pattern!
