Gasometer Oberhausen Museum, Wonders of Nature Exhibit extended until end of 2017 IV

Gasometer Oberhausen Museum has reported a record breaking visitor count of 750.000 by end of 2016 for their "Wonders of Nature" exhibit  and has hence decided to extend until November 30, 2017. I have participated in that with some of my works in large prints and a video presentation. An impressive location it is, the highest Museum in Germany (116m high, 66m wide) showing some amazing exhibit areas inside:

My contribution are some images of a Zinnia haageana flower in large prints, on display in their exhibition area below that 20 meter large earth globe, demonstrating the difference between our human vision, as well as a video presentation shown on LCD panel which originates from the BBC series "How to grow a planet - The hidden World of UV" which has several of my VIS and UV images of different flowers in it.

Gasometer Oberhausen Museum, Wonders of Nature Exhibit 2016 III

Gasometer Oberhausen exhibit "Wonders of Nature" has reached more that 500.000 visitors so far and has just announced to extend the exhibit until 30.12.2016!

My contribution are some images of a Zinnia haageana flower in large prints, on display in their exhibition area below that globe, demonstrating the difference between our human vision, as well as a video presentation shown on LCD panel which originates from the BBC series "How to grow a planet - The hidden World of UV" which has several VIS and UV images of different flowers in it.

How to stand out in the crowd - Gazania rigens shows its ecologic advantage vs Rudbeckia fulgida and Rudbeckia hirta using intense UV reflection III

Today about how even some UV reflecting flowers (Gazania rigens) have achieved a competitive edge over other UV reflecting flowers (Rudbeckia fulgida and R. hirta) by making use of a specific very intense UV reflection around 370nm. This will be shown in human vision, in reflected ultraviolet photography and also in simulated bee vision. I was using my "work horse" UV filter, the Baader-U filter for reflected UV, my XBV filter for simulated bee vision aside from a visible light shot. Lens was my UV-Nikkor 105mm quartz flourite lens. Light source was a modified Xenon flash. All shots were done at f11. [These shots were done with a new camera system and are available on request in very high resolution (40 and 60 Mp)].

Rudbeckia fulgida + R. hirta vs white Gazania rigens, visible image:

In visible light, all these flowers are rather bright yellow / orange (Rudbeckia) and white (Gazania) to our human eye. But the white Gazania rigens against the Rudbeckia fulgida and R. hirta flowers shows an even more prominent and bright bullseye pattern in reflected UV (only visible to bees and butterflies), as its petals are very, very UV bright (around 370nm) and its center is very UV dark, compared to the other UV reflecting flowers, which makes them clearly even more visible in UV, hence creating an impressive competitive edge in terms of chances for getting pollinated even against those other flowers with UV bullseye pattern - and all this gets nicely visible, also in simulated bee vision.

How to stand out in the crowd - Rudbeckia fulgida and Zinnia haageana show its ecologic advantage using intense UV reflection II

Today more about how some yellow flowers (Rudbeckia fulgida and Zinnia haageana) have achieved a competitive edge over other yellow flowers (Coreopsis verticillata in this case) by making use of a specific intense UV reflection around 365nm, matched to the insect eyes UV sensitivity. This will be shown side-by-side in human vision and also in reflected ultraviolet photography. I was using my "work horse" UV filter, the Baader-U filter for reflected UV, aside from a visible light shot. Lens was my UV-Nikkor 105mm quartz flourite lens. Light source was sunlight. All shots were done at f8.

In visible light, all these flowers are rather bright yellow / orange to our human eye. But this Rudbeckia fulgida and Zinnia haageana flower shows a very prominent and bright bullseye pattern in reflected UV (only visible to bees and butterflies), as their petals are very UV bright (around 350-365nm) and their center is very UV dark, compared to the rather UV non-reflecting other flowers, which makes them nearly invisible in UV, hence creating an impressive competitive edge in terms of chances for getting pollinated - and all this gets nicely visible.

Gasometer Oberhausen Museum, Wonders of Nature Exhibit 2016 II

Been at the vernissage and grand opening of the exhibit "Wonders of Nature" at Gasometer Oberhausen Museum where I participate with some of my works. It will be open to the public from March 11, 2016 until December 30, 2016. An impressive location it is, the highest Museum in Germany (116m high, 66m wide) showing some amazing exhibit areas inside:

Gasometer Oberhausen Museum, Wonders of Nature Exhibit 2016

The project management of Gasometer Oberhausen Museum has asked me to participate with some of my works for their forthcoming 2016 exhibit "Wonders of Nature", which will open up its doors to the public March 11, 2016 and will last till December 30, 2016.

Their petals are very UV dark in the middle and bottom, their petal tips, however, are very UV bright (around 360nm outer tip, 350nm middle tip, 345nm border to dark), reaching deeper into UV as any other flower I know of, and all this gets nicely visible.

Today shots of very decorative summer flowers, Mexican Zinnia - Zinnia haagenea in reflected ultraviolet photography using my "work horse" UV filter, the Baader-U filter as well as a 340nm short pass filter for deep(er) UV photography. Lens was my CERCO 94mm quartz flourite lens. Light source was sunlight. All shots were done at about f5.6.

Mexican Zinnia flowers have very specific UV patterns which reach quite deep into UV. Their petals are very UV dark in the middle and bottom, their petal tips, however, are very UV bright (here around 370nm outer tip, 365nm middle tip). Deeper UV photography reveals, that the outer tip part reaches even deeper into UV, deeper as any other flower I know of, and all this gets nicely visible.

Their petals are very UV dark in the middle and bottom, their petal tips, however, are very UV bright (around 370nm outer tip, 365nm middle tip, 350nm border to dark), reaching deeper into UV as any other flower I know of, and all this gets nicely visible.
