Dandelion and Daisy - Taraxacum officinale and Bellis perennis flower in reflected UV ultraviolet photography and simulated bee vision

Today shots of two early spring flowers, Bellis perennis - Common Daisy. and Dandelion - Taraxacum officinale in reflected ultraviolet photography. Lens was a CERCO 94mm quartz fluorite lens. Light source was sunlight. All shots were done at about f8 in reflected ultraviolet photography using my "work horse" UV filter, the Baader-U filter, as well as my XBV6 filter for simulated bee vision. This Dandelion flower has quite a prominent UV pattern, its petals are UV bright around 365nm, its center is UV dark, especially the anthers. Common Daisy, however has a bulls-eye UV pattern, its center is UV dark, and the petals are UV reflective around 380nm and both gets quite nicely visible side-a-side, also in simulated bee vision. Wouldn't it be interesting to find out, which flower is actually preferred by its pollinators, based on the very different reflection patterns in UV and BV?

Spring Flowers 2014: Bellis perennis - Common Daisy - 80mm Quartz Fluorite lens for reflected ultraviolet photography

Well, spring finally seem to have arrived in Weinheim where I live, so here a few shots of some first spring flowers, like that Bellis perennis - Common Daisy.. Shots were done aside from visible photography in reflected ultraviolet using Baader-U filter and in simulated bee vision using my XBV6 filter. Lens used was an older f3.2 / 80mm Quartz Fluorite lens. Light source was sun. All shots were done at approx. f8.

Common Daisy has a bulls-eye UV pattern, its center is UV dark, and the petals are UV reflective aroudn 380nm. This older quartz fluorite lens is reproducing this quite well and all that gets nicely visible.

Spring Flowers 2013 - Cerco 94mm Quartz Fluorite lens for reflected ultraviolet photography

Today about some early spring flowers, Winter Aconite and Bellis perennis in reflected ultraviolet photography using my "work horse" UV filter, the Baader-U filter, plus a new filter, consisting of a Schott UG1 + S8612 stack. Lens was a CERCO 94mm quartz fluorite lens. Light source was the last sunrays of that wonderful spring Sunday. All shots were done at about f5.6. So, on to the results now...

[UV] Spring flowers in UV ultraviolet light - yellow overdose

Just the perfect sunny spring day today and a chance to capture some yellow flowers, that also come out yellow in UV in my standardized false color scheme - as they reflect UV around 360nm. I'm showing matched image pairs (VIS, UV).

This UV image here also uses my standardized false UV color normal + high intensity palette:



1) Oregon grape (Mahonia aquifolium)




2) Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) and Daisy (Bellis perennis) and Ground Ivy (Glechoma hederacea)




3)Lesser Celandine (Ranunculus ficaria)




4) Yellow Anemone (Anemone ranunculoides)




5) Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale)




6) Wild Tulip (Tulipa xx) and Pheasant's Eye (Adonis vernalis)




Pretty amazing what nature does to attract pollinators!
